        When is a building permit required?

        A permit is required for any construction, alteration, repair, relocation, enlargement, demolition, or change of use to any building or structure regulated by the Minnesota State Building Code. This includes building additions, decks, sheds over 200 square feet, work to a permanent weather-resistive surface, and finishing previously unfinished spaces.

        How long does permit review take?

        The City of Edina targets an average plan review time of 4.2 business days for standard residential permits. Commercial projects and complex submittals may take longer. You will receive email notifications at each stage of the review process.

        Who can apply for a permit?

        Building permits may be issued to homeowners who homestead the property or contractors licensed by the State of Minnesota. Mechanical and plumbing permits are issued only to licensed contractors unless the homeowner resides in the home.

        How do I schedule an inspection?

        Once your permit is approved and work begins, you can schedule inspections online through your account or by using the Track page with your permit number. Inspections can be requested for specific dates and exact time windows. You will receive confirmation by email.
